University of Denver - Nelson Hall
DENVER, CO « Back to Higher Education listing
Haselden provided construction management, preconstruction and general contracting services for this fast-track project. Nelson Hall was the first new residence hall constructed at the University of Denver campus in 35 years.
Nelson Hall houses a central kitchen and food service court for 431 second-, third- and fourth-year students residing in 295 units. Some of the kitchen detail includes low voltage lights, high-end tile and copper clad equipment. The cast-in-place concrete structure, with two-Wythe brick and limestone exterior walls, includes study areas, dining hall surrounding an open courtyard and two floors of underground parking.
Haselden implemented a detailed construction sequence plan to help speed up construction and to keep the small fenced site as unencumbered as possible. As the value manager, Haselden’s primary focus was on helping the owner achieve its objectives. As such, Haselden developed an alternative layout of the residence rooms that incorporated more units per floor, allowing the University to generate more revenue to afford the building they wanted and designed. This philosophy set the standard for new residence buildings to follow.
